QANTAS/Jetstar Language Proficiency Certificate Test

The University of New South Wales Institute of Languages conducts language tests for QANTAS/Jetstar in limited languages.

Who is the Test for?

The QANTAS/Jetstar Language Proficiency Certificate Test is offered to people interested in becoming Flight Attendants with QANTAS/Jetstar as well as to QANTAS/Jetstar staff who are seeking accreditation in a language other than English (LOTE).

What does the Test assess?

The Test assesses your ability to communicate formally with customers in a language other than English (LOTE). The Test simulates situations typically encountered by Flight Attendants performing their normal job functions on the plane.

Does the Test assess writing skills?

The Test is oral, there is no written component.

Does the Test assess technical vocabulary?

No. You are not expected to know technical terms but must be able to use vocabulary likely to be encountered on a plane, (a vocabulary list can be found in the QANTAS/Jetstar Handbook).

What level should I reach to be considered by QANTAS/Jetstar?

You should be an advanced level speaker of the language. You need to achieve an Advanced Level Pass in the Test if you are seeking employment with QANTAS/Jetstar.

What happens after I enrol?
When we receive your fee, we will provide you with the examiner's contact details. You then contact the examiner and arrange a time to sit for the test with the examiner.

How soon after I enrol do I have to take the test?
After you enrol, you have three months from the date on your receipt in which to take the test. After that, your enrolment will expire and you will lose your fee. If you then wish to re-enrol, you will need to pay the full fee again.

How many times can I take the Test?
You may re-take the test as many times as you wish. We strongly advise you to take private study or a course before re-attempting the test. Re-sit fees are at the full price

Please Note: if your credit card is declined or if you provide incorrect credit card details, we will charge you an additional AUD$30 for administration fees.

The Test assesses your level of competence in the LOTE, through the following activities:

Competency 1: Can conduct complex routine workplace oral communication in the LOTE, regarding Qantas matters (two role plays)
In the role plays the examiner plays the customer and you play the Flight Attendant. You are given a role card and are required to interact with the examiner in the other language. Paraphrasing is acceptable if the message is clear and accurate.

Competency 2: Can read aloud printed workplace documents (Qantas Public Announcements) in the LOTE.
You are given a text in the LOTE to read aloud (70-100 words).

Romanised scripts are available for Chinese and Japanese.

Competency 3: Can sight interpret Qantas workplace documents (Public Announcements or similar text), from English into the LOTE.
You have two minutes to study a Public Announcement or similar text in English (50-70 words) and deliver the message in the other language.

Competency 4: Can interpret workplace information, from a spoken source (Captain's message) from English into the LOTE.
You hear a Captain's message in English once and interpret the information into the LOTE.

What do I need to take on the day of the Test?

Please make sure that you take the test receipt and photo identification to the test. Without these two items, the examiner cannot conduct the test and you will forfeit your fee.

Certificates are ready seven to ten days after passing the test. We can post the Certificate to you or you can collect it from the Institute in person if you live in Sydney.
