IELTS Logo

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study or work where English is the language of communication. The test was taken by 2.9 million candidates in 2016 in 140 countries. IELTS test scores are trusted and recognised by over 9,000 organisations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. UNSW Institute of Languages is an approved IELTS testing centre.

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment through more than 1100 test centres.

  • You can book and pay for your test online from the convenience of your home, work or place of study.
  • Tests are held regularly on Saturdays and some tests are held on Thursdays.
  • The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all taken on the same day in the morning.
  • The Speaking test will usually take place on the same day as the other test papers, between 1.00pm and 5.30pm.
  • The IELTS test fee is AUD$330 (AUD$363 if a GST payment is required).
    • IELTS has a set fee for its test. Each test centre in Australia charges the same amount.
    • The Academic (AC) and General Training (GT) tests have the same test fee.
  • You must register and pay your IELTS test fee online. UNSW Global cannot accept cash payments.
  • Online bookings for most tests close 3 days before the test (unless sold out prior).

Test Day Checklist

  • Arrive at the venue (7:45am if you need to have your photo taken); by 8.15am if you have had your photo taken before test day. Candidate registration closes at 8.30am. Latecomers will not be allowed into the test room.
  • A label with your candidate number and speaking test time will be placed on your desk.
  • Speaking Tests are held between 1.00pm - 5.30pm on the day of the test.  If you require an early or late Speaking test time, please email IELTS.Enquiries@unswglobal.unsw.edu.au no less than 3 days before your test date.
  • You must bring the valid (not expired) passport which you used to book the test. This is the only form of identification that will be accepted on test day. If you do not have your valid passport, you cannot sit the test.
  • If you have a new passport since registering for an IELTS test, you must present your new passport to an IELTS staff member at UNSW Global Student Services at least 3 days before the test date to ensure we have your new details on test day.
  • Only your passport and a clear, plastic bottle of water (labels removed) can be taken into the test room. Please note water is NOT supplied by the test centre.
  • On test day, you will be given information on where to register, have your photo taken and where the test will be held. The location for all tests is 223 Anzac Parade Kensington.
  • Free parking is available on Saturdays in UNSW carpark (off Day Avenue).

Test results are usually available 13 calendar days after the completion of your test.

  • Test results can be collected in person from UNSW Institute of Languages, Level 1 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington between 11.00am - 1.00pm.
  • To collect the results in person you must bring your valid passport as identification. No-one else can collect the results for you.
  • If you do not collect your test results in person at the allotted collection time, they will be mailed that afternoon to the address you registered with, or the address you provided on the day of the test (on your Change of Address form).
  • For more information on test result collection, please read FAQs.
  • You can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within six weeks of your test date. You will be charged a fee of AUD$176 for your enquiry, which will be refunded in full if your band scores change.
    • Note that IELTS markers follow strict assessment guidelines and are regularly monitored. The testing process has the highest quality control procedures.

On the day of the test. This information will be printed on your desk label. The speaking times will also be listed on a notice board on Ground Floor near the entrance; please check the list carefully.

At this centre the speaking tests are usually held in the afternoon of the same day as the written tests. If you need to request an early or late speaking test time on that day due to work commitments or childcare arrangements etc. please email IELTS.Enquiries@unswglobal.unsw.edu.au no less than 3 days before your test.

  1. You can have your photo taken at UNSW Global Student Services (level 1, 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington, open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.45pm). You cannot have your photo taken on the day before your test. If you have already had your photo taken prior to test day, you should arrive on test day by 8.15am
  2. You can have your photo taken on test day at the test centre at 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington. You must arrive on test day at 7.45am

You MUST bring your passport with you; otherwise, we cannot take your photo and you cannot sit for the test.

Please note that you must have your photo taken for each IELTS test that you register for.

If places are available, you can change between test modules no less than 3 days before your test date. Take your valid passport, payment confirmation email, and completed IELTS Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form to UNSW Global Student Services (level 1, 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington, open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.45pm). There is no fee charged for a module transfer on the same test day.

Yes. You must be able to arrive at the test centre at the advertised times on test day. You will not be admitted into the test if you are running late.

Yes, if it is five weeks or more before the test date you have already booked. There will be an administrative fee of AUD$82.

You can cancel your test if it is five or more weeks before the test date. You must go to UNSW Global Student Services (level 1, 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington, open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.45pm) to submit an IELTS Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form. Please bring your valid passport. You will receive a refund, less a cancellation fee of AUD$82.

If you cancel less than five weeks before the test date you will not receive a refund.

If you are unable to attend the test due to illness, you should complete IELTS Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form. It also needs to be completed and stamped by the doctor you visit (see page 3) and should be accompanied by an original medical certificate. You have up to 5 working days after the test date to submit all documentation. Please bring your passport when you lodge your refund/transfer request. Requests for a refund or transfer will not be accepted after this time.

Where can I put my personal belongings on test day?

Where can I put my personal belongings on test day?

You must leave all personal items in the bag room. This includes electronic devices and mobile phones (switched off), watches, wallets, keys, hats and coats. The bag room will be locked for the duration of the test. No responsibility will be taken by the centre for the loss of any personal items on test day.

Only your passport and a clear plastic bottle of water (labels removed) can be taken into the test room. Stationery is provided.

You can complete the Change of Address form placed on your desk on test day, or email us at IELTS.Enquiries@unswglobal.unsw.edu.au. If you contact us by email, please provide your full name, date of birth and passport number, and be sure to email us from the same email account you used to register for the test.

If you will not be in Australia when the results are due for release, you can

  1. Bring a prepaid International Express Post or International Registered Post envelope (available from Australia Post) and give it to the supervisor in the morning before your test. Please complete the front with your name and full postal address. We will complete the Sender’s details.

If you choose not to collect your results in person at the allotted collection time (which is normally 13 calendar days after your test), results are sent by regular mail with Australia Post. If you wish to have your results sent by Express Post or Registered Post, please hand a prepaid Express Post or Registered Post envelope (available from Australia Post) to the supervisor on test day. Your results are normally available 13 calendar days after your test (result release date).  If you have not received your results in the post 3 weeks AFTER the result release date (for Australian addresses) and 4 weeks AFTER the result release date (for international addresses) , please complete the Application for the Issue of Additional TRFs form. One replacement will be issued at no charge to Australian addresses; a $25 postage charge applies for international addresses*.

* Please note that there is no charge for one replacement TRF as long as it is sent to the same address provided by candidates at registration/test day.

Candidates who have not contacted us to advise that their TRF has not arrived in the post within 8 weeks AFTER the result release date will be charged $20 for the re- issue of the TRF (plus $25 postage for international addresses only).

Candidates who require their TRF sent to a different address than that provided at registration will incur a $20 charge for the re-issue of the TRF.

If you have lost your TRF, please complete the Application for the Issue of Additional TRFs form. There will be a $20 charge for the re- issue of the TRF (plus $25 postage for international addresses only).

Can I request that a copy of my TRF is sent to Government departments, approved professional organizations, employers or languages schools?

Can I request that a copy of my TRF is sent to Government departments, approved professional organizations,

employers or languages schools?

If you complete the appropriate section in your initial online application, we can send up to five free copies to Government departments, approved professional organizations, employers or languages schools. We cannot send copies to relatives, immigration agents or education agents. AUD$20.00 will be charged for each copy requested after the test and you must complete the Application for the Issue of Additional TRFs Form. If you want your results to be sent to any overseas institutions, you must provide addressed, pre-paid envelope or we can send these to your chosen institution for a $25 postage charge per copy (total of $45 for the additional TRF plus postage).

A number of institutions are registered to accept electronic TRFs from a Test Centre so you should check if your institution is registered to receive results electronically. There is no charge for this electronic service.

Yes. You must complete an IELTS Enquiry on Results (EOR) form and lodge it with your original Test Report Form (TRF) and bank details at UNSW Global Student Services (level 1, 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.45pm) within six weeks of the test date. It can take up to six weeks for the re-mark to be processed. The fee is AUD$176 which is refunded if your band score(s) change. The fee is the same if you get one, two, three or all four components of the test re-marked.

Preparation Courses

UNSW Institute of Languages offers both full-time and part-time IELTS preparation courses and as well as an online e-Writing Tutorial. Our e-Writing Tutorial and preparation courses are well recognised and our teachers are highly experienced and dedicated to preparing you for successful test outcomes.

IELTS e-Writing Tutorial is an online one-to-one course designed to prepare students for the IELTS Writing exam. Separate Academic and General Training modules are available.

Full-time intensive programs are available in five week terms throughout the year and cover each of the language areas included in IELTS.

Preparation courses provide regular IELTS test practice and ongoing feedback in order to identify and work on your specific areas of need.

Before you start

What you need to register for the IELTS test online:

  • A scanned copy of your valid passport pages in an electronic format (e.g.pdf) and in ONE document no greater than 1.5Mb.
  • A method of payment (VISA, Mastercard or Union Pay) to secure your booking.
  • A valid email address as a receipt for your transaction will be automatically emailed to you.

What you need to register for the IELTS test online

  • You will be asked to select a test module as part of your test booking, either Academic or General Training. Please ensure you know which module you require for your particular circumstances. For more information visit the IELTS website.

Instructions

Follow the steps below to complete your online booking:

  1. Click the ‘IELTS Book Online Now’ button below.
  2. Select a Test Date and Test Module (either Academic or General Training)
  3. New User - Create an account with your personal details; passwords must be a minimum of 6 characters.
  4. Existing User - Login with your Username and password.
  5. Accept the IELTS Terms and Conditions.
  6. Fill in the IELTS online candidate registration form. Questions with an asterisk (*) are obligatory and you will not be able to continue without completing an answer.
  7. Upload a clear legible scanned copy of your passport including the pages containing your (Passport number, Name, Date of birth, Photo, Passport expiry date and Signature page.)
  8. After you have checked your application details you will be taken to a secure webpage to enter your payment details.
  9. You will receive an email confirming your payment. A receipt will be emailed to the email address you provided in the booking process. If you do NOT receive an email payment confirmation, please email IELTS.Enquiries@unswglobal.unsw.edu.au as soon as possible, as your booking may not be valid.
  10. You must have your finger scan and photo taken to complete your registration.
    Choose from the following two options:
    • On your test day your photo and finger scan can be taken at the IELTS test venue before the test begins. You must arrive by 7.45am.
    • In advance you can visit UNSW Global Student Services on level 1, 223 Anzac Parade, Kensington (open Monday- Friday 9am - 4.45pm) to have your photo taken. You must arrive on test day by 8.15am.

Note that you cannot have your photo taken on the day before your test.

Please make sure that you bring your passport and booking payment receipt with you when you come to have your photo taken.
