TOEFL test centre

TOEFL is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world. These tests measure how well you read, listen, speak and write in English. Most people who take the TOEFL test are planning to study at colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

The TOEFL tests available at UNSW Institute of Languages are internet-based (TOEFL iBT)

Dates, Times and Fees

The internet-based TOEFL test fee is US$300.

  • TOEFL has a set fee for its online test.  Each internet-based test centre in Australia will charge the same amount.
  • Your local currency will automatically be converted to US$ via the online payment portal.
  • You have to register online for this test. To register, please go to the TOEFL website.
  • Payments can be made via credit card, PayPal, or direct funds transfer from US bank accounts.
  • You must arrive at the test centre to register at 11.30am on the day of your test.

Test Day Checklist

  • The day before the test, you should check your TOEFL online profile, to make sure that there have been no changes to your test.
  • Arrive at the venue by 11.30am for registration.  Latecomers may not be able to take the test.
  • You must bring with you:
    • the same photo identification that you used to register for the test.
    • your passport (a drivers licence is not acceptable unless you are an Australian citizen).
    • your registration confirmation.
  • Your photo will be taken at the test centre and placed at your seat.  The same photo will also appear on your score report.
  • You will be asked to sign a compulsory confidentiality agreement.
  • You must leave all your personal belongings, including mobile phones, outside the test room (you may take your identification documents in with you).
  • If you need help during the test, raise your hand and ask the administrator. 
  • Please remember that the timing-clock on your assigned computer will not stop for any reason once your test has started.

Results

  • Your scores will automatically be available online approximately 10 days after your testing date.
    • You can select up to four specific institutions or agencies to receive your scores during the registration process.
  • When you receive an email letting you know that your scores are available, log in to your TOEFL iBT account and click "View Scores" on your home page.
  • Your test fee payment automatically entitles you to your online score record.
    • It also includes up to four official score reports that ETS will send directly to the institutions or agencies you designate before you test. 
  • NOTE: Your test cannot be rescored if you have already requested that your scores be sent to an institution or agency.
  • You can add, delete or change score recipients up to 10:00 pm, local test centre time, the day before your test.
  • You are also entitled to one paper score record for yourself (if you request it).
  • You can have official score reports sent to additional institutions or agencies for a fee. These can be ordered online or by completing the TOEFL Official Score Report Request Form at www.ets.org/toefl.

The TOEFL iBT test is administered via the Internet, and the TOEFL PBT test is administered in a paper-based format. The TOEFL PBT test is being phased out

The TOEFL iBT test uses a standard English-language QWERTY computer keyboard.

Can I change my test date?

Can I change my test date?

Yes; as long as you do so more than 3 full days before the test date.  For example, the deadline to reschedule a Saturday test is Tuesday.

  • You can only reschedule via the TOEFL iBT online registration system or by calling the appropriate Regional Registration Centre available at http://www.ets.org/toefl/contact/australia.  UNSW Institute of Languages is NOT authorised to make schedule changes.
  • There is a US$60 fee charged for rescheduling.

Can I cancel my test?

Yes; as long as you do so more than 3 full days before the test date.  For example, the deadline to reschedule a Saturday test is Tuesday.

  • If you cancel your test before this deadline, half of the test fee will be refunded.  The other half is kept by ETS to cover processing charges.
  • All refunds will be in the same currency at the same exchange rate as your original payment.

Yes; you can have the Writing and/or Speaking sections of your test rescored — up to 30 days after you take the test.

  • The test can be rescored only once.
  • If you want both sections rescored, they must be done at the same time.
  • If the rescore results in a change in your score (lower or higher), the revised scores will become your official scores.
  • Your test cannot be rescored if you have already requested that your scores be sent to an institution or agency.
  • Each section costs US$80. Both sections together cost US$160. See TOEFL iBT Fees for payment policies.
  • To request rescoring, complete the TOEFL iBT Rescoring Request Form (PDF).
  • Scores are reported online about three weeks after your request for a rescore is received.

  • There are a variety of practice materials available to help you prepare for the TOEFL iBT test and build your English skills. These include free sample questions, practice tests, interactive skill-building programs, and detailed tips and information for understanding more about the test.
  • Go to the ETS website for details about some of the preparation materials available.

How to Apply

Decide on a test date from the list of dates available at UNSW Institute of Languages.

  • Go to the TOEFL website, sign-up to create a TOEFL user profile.
  • From your profile page, select “Register for a Test/Order Score Reports” then select “TOEFL Test”
  • Select your test date.
  • Select the Test Centre: UNSW Global Pty Ltd, University of New South Wales (STN11014A).
  • Enter in all your remaining personal information and complete all the compulsory fields marked with an asterisk *.
  • This is your opportunity to select four institutions to automatically receive your test scores.
  • Make your payment to complete your registration.
  • Payments can be made via credit card, PayPal, or direct funds transfer from US bank accounts.

NOTE: Avoid using the “Back” button in your web browser during registration.  Your information may be lost and you will need to begin the process again.
