Health Professionals - Occupational English Test (OET) Preparation

English for health professionals courses are suitable for overseas trained health professionals who need to study English in a medical context in order to improve their communication skills to pass the Australian Medical Council's Occupational English Test (OET) and to ultimately achieve professional registration and practice in Australia.

Courses focus on developing language skills in the Australian medical context including preparation for the OET.

Courses are suitable for overseas trained health professionals such as: doctors – general practitioners and specialists, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, veterinarians, radiographers and dietitians.

Course content includes:

  • reading, writing, speaking and listening skills development in a medical context
  • Cross cultural awareness
  • awareness of the use of colloquial and idiomatic English
  • grammar and vocabulary development
  • Referral letter writing
  • health professional/client roleplays
  • functional language, such as language for   taking histories, giving explanations, giving advice, giving reassurance, dealing with difficult patients
  • OET test practice

Course topics for the full time course include:

  • Orientation to the Australian Health System
  • Anatomy
  • Children's Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Preventative Health
  • Ethical Issues
  • Mental Illness
  • Advances in Medicine

On successful completion of the full time course students are awarded a Certificate 3 in Spoken and Written English.

Two online courses are available:

English for Health Professionals - Doctors
This course has five units based on three doctor-patient consultations which provide extensive skill practice for students in listening, with language and pronunciation exercises along with a range of support resources.

Cost: $530. Access is available for 6 months from registration.

English for Health Professionals - Nurses
This course has 6 units based on a range of hospital situations to develop student skills. Content includes videos of nurses in hospital settings, listening exercises, pronunciation, vocabulary and language exercises, supported by a comprehensive resource workbook.

Cost: $530. Access is available for 6 months from registration.
